From 2013-2017, Brookes co-founded and edited The Mackinac, an online poetry magazine. In addition to editing the magazine, she curated each issue's Companion Playlist on Spotify and wrote "The Liquor List," pairing each poem with a beverage. She shared responsibilities for formulating interview questions for the featured poets, managing the social media accounts, and crating email marketing campaigns.
Starting in 2017, for two years Brookes served as the Development Manager of Cream City Review, a graduate literary journal operating out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In this role, Brookes spearheaded the magazine’s rebranding efforts, overhauled its social media presence, and conceived and implemented a community outreach branch of the journal. She was also one of the coordinators of the Eat Local::Read Local poetry series, a celebration of Poetry Month that showcases partnerships between local restaurants and poets from Wisconsin.
Brookes supervised students publishing the undergraduate literary journal, Furrow, the 2018 winner of AWP's National Program Director's Content Prize. Her duties included contributing to the course textbook on literary journal production, overseeing the marketing, fundraising, and event planning teams, and managing the magazine’s poetry editors.
In addition to her editing work, for three years Brookes served as a judge for the Delaware region in the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers’ Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards. Most recently, Brookes worked in the Publisher's Office at Red Hen Press in Pasadena, CA.
